Introduction to Black-and-White Photography

This class will cover the fundamentals of black and white photography, including using a 35mm camera, developing black and white film, and printing enlargements. We will work extensively on skill-building – navigating the technical aspects of shooting and working in the darkroom – while focusing on aesthetic concerns (such as light and composition), and reviewing the work of master photographers. Class time will be split between lab time and critique/discussion. Students are required to use an SLR camera with manual controls.

Studio Lighting For Portraits and Headshots

The fundamental ingredient of photography is light and nowhere does the photographer have more control of light than in the studio. In this class, we will use and control tungsten and strobe light to create portraits and headshots. In this hands-on class students will use studio lighting equipment to manipulate light and create images as they see them. Working with live models and a make-up artist, students will learn to use exposure meters, umbrellas, soft-boxes, backgrounds, reflectors and other materials necessary to creating outstanding images. At the conclusion of this class, students will have a strong working knowledge of studio portraits and headshots and will be able to walk into a studio, set up, and produce the kind of pictures they desire.
